(See above some images from our Active School Flag-raising Ceremony)

We have been awarded an Active School Flag for striving to achieve a physical educated and physically active school community. Much hard work went into achievement under the leadership of Ms. Walkin, Ms. Hazel O’Donnell and the Active Schools Committee. They worked with the staff and children of the school to ensure we taught a broad and balanced PE curriculum and helped us plan, implement and monitor improvements in PE and physical activity. As part of the process we informed and invited the whole school community to participate in the ASF process.

We have a long and proud tradition of sport and physical activity in Behy National School particularly in relation to Gaelic games. We proudly display the match ball from Mayo’s last All-Ireland win in 1951, kindly donated to the school by team member and past-pupil, Fr. Peter Quinn. In participating in the Active Schools Programme, our aim was to build on and broaden this sporting tradition.

Over the course of the 2-year programme, a great number and range of physical activities were provided for the children in Behy National School including a full ‘Active School Week.’ Some of the many fun activities we engaged in included:

  • Cumann na mBunscol Hurling

Active School Flag for Behy

Behy National School has a new flag to add to its record-breaking six Green Flags. But this time it’s an Active School Flag! Active School Flags are awarded to schools that achieve ‘a physically educated and physically active school community.’ The school has been working towards attaining this flag over the last two years by introducing a range of sport and recreational activities and events to their physical education programme including dance, ‘boxercise,’ active tours, Active Schools Week, sports days, golf, karate, tag rugby, aerobics, ‘Celebrity Bainisteoir,’ a parents’ weekly walk and gymnastics just to mention a few.

The school has also been able to provide superb facilities for the children to engage in their Active Schools Programme with the addition of a children’s playground and an Astroturf pitch over the course of the school year.

The Active Schools Programme is overseen by Mayo Education Centre. After a recent assessment of their project, the school received the great news that it would be awarded an Active School Flag. Principal, Pat Cunnane, noted that this could not have been achieved without the excellent leadership of teachers Linda Walkin, Hazel O’Donnell and their Active Schools Committee, consisting of representatives from each class.

The Active Schools Committee unveiled their flag to the school community at a recent Sports Day. The school will have an official flag raising ceremony in September to celebrate the achievement.

Ballina Town FC Kenny Cup took place on Tuesday 10th June. Behy will enter 2 teams: Behy A (Gold) and Behy B (Royal blue). The teams did very well.

The A team won 2 and lost 1 group game. They played the Cup quarter- final against an all- conquering Rehins team and held them to a draw but lost on a golden goal in extra – time.

The B team won 1 and lost 2 group games. They played Culleens B in the shield semi Final, were level after full- time and extra- time but lost out in a penalty shoot- out.

We all enjoyed the day and hope to be even stronger in the Kenny Cup next year!
